On “JewBarrassment”: Jewish Wisdom on Not-Knowing

Several years ago, the term “JewBarrassment” came on the scene to describe a negative feeling some experience when they make a ritual “mistake,” or don't know something relating to Jewish culture or observance. Whether you have heard of “JewBarrassment” or are new to the term, many of us can identify with the fear of not-knowing the “right” thing to do in one setting or another—regardless of Jewish background, upbringing, or experience. In this spirit, join Rabbi Emmanuel for an open-hearted conversation and learning exploring Jewish wisdom and personal reflections on a wide-range of experiences and feelings associated with “JewBarrassment.”

All are welcome and no prior experience necessary. We will gather at a home in Arlington that is Metro accessible. Address will be shared with registrants.

“Religious Adulting”: A Spiritual Approach to Young Adulthood

In the wake of the Holocaust, an unpublished manuscript was found in the rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto. Written before the war, the author— Hasidic rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira—buried his life’s work shortly before his death. In doing so, he preserved his “Hakhsharat HaAvrekhim,” a spiritual guidebook seeking to speak to the life experiences and religious questions facing communities of young adults. Join Rabbi Emmanuel for study and conversation about this unique text, exploring its wisdom and takeaways for our lives today.

Understanding and Navigating Antisemitism (3-part cohort series) Sign Up by Jan. 7

Join Rabbi Aderet for this unique mini-cohort experience on exploring antisemitism at the Den.

In April, Rabbi Aderet was invited to present on antisemitism at Johns Hopkins University’s Religious Literacy Series. In Rabbi Aderet’s presentation on antisemitism for the JHU DEI staff team she covered: antisemitism’s origins, its history, antisemitic tropes, and ways for the campus staff to better understand the complexity of the moment and ways to best support students during this tumultuous time.

Rabbi Aderet transformed her presentation into a thoughtfully curated 3-part series that will take participants on an in-depth exploration of antisemitism from past to present. From antisemitism’s historical roots and pervasive nature to its detrimental impact on our society today. How do we navigate antisemitism today?

Together throughout this series, we will foster a safe space for guided reflection, inviting those who would like to share about some of their experiences of antisemitism, especially during the past year.

Please note, this is a 3-part series. Participants are expected to attend all 3 sessions as material builds from class to class and we will establish a cohort feel to enable us to cover these sensitive matters together in community.

No experience necessary. Everyone welcome. A central location will be shared with registrants once we see where registrants are traveling from.

Class Dates: Tuesdays: 1/21, 1/28, 2/4 (7-8:45pm)

Post-Election Shabbat Connection: Reflections + Blessings

After a tense election season, we look forward to coming together with you to connect in community, to take a much-needed pause to welcome Shabbat with blessings, and to just be together in a safe and sacred space in proper Den style.

We’ll gather to make kiddush (blessing over wine/grape juice) as a community, take a breath, and reflect on the week in this safe and sacred space we’ll build together.

May we each be gently present to what we are holding, having gratitude for the many ways we gather and support one another moving forward.

To set the mood and get ready for our Shabbat gathering:

1) Feel free to pour yourself wine or grape juice for kiddush if you have some on hand. If not, we can virtually share our cup!

2) If you have challah bread or a roll, put it out on the table with a cover over it.

3) Candle lighting is at 4:41pm (Feel free to light Shabbat candles in advance if you’d like.)

With blessings for a peaceful Shabbat.

HiHo Hike: Adventures in Nature 9/22

Jewish mystics retreated into nature as a way to experience a more profound sense of intention and attention to their lives. We’ll be guided on our hikes by our very own “hike captains” (nature lovin’ folks from the Den), followed by learning and discussion to get us warmed up for the season. BYO snack + water bottle.

This High Holy Day Hike will be held Sunday, September 22 from 10:00am - 12:00pm

Meeting location will be shared with registrants; hikes will be centrally located and transit-accessible. No experience necessary. All are welcome!

Cultivating Hope in Troubling Times: Challah Bake + Study

We’ve been through a lot over the past year — collectively and individually. Join Rabbi Aderet for an intimate evening of deep connection, sweet challah baking, and exploration of Jewish teachings addressing the question, “How do we cultivate hope during troubling times?” We’ll begin with learning how to braid round and sweet Rosh Hashana challahs then move into our learning as the challahs are baking in the oven. You’ll take home your freshly baked challah bread to enjoy over the holiday.

We will gather in Bethesda, MD in a Metro accessible location. No prior experience necessary. All are welcome.

The Only Constant is Change: Learning + Reflection on Change as a Spiritual Experience

The High Holy Day liturgy and Torah readings portray a God that is always changing. And so are we. After a challenging year, join Rabbi Emmanuel for an evening of study, conversation, and storytelling as we reflect on the ways we have changed, and how we hope to change in the New Year.

We will gather at a home in Arlington, VA that is Metro accessible, address will be shared with registrants. No prior experience necessary, and all are welcome.

Sign up by Sept. 10.
